Panasonic Premier Series TH-65VX100 Quick Review E-mail
Quick Look Reviews
Wednesday, 16 December 2009

panasonicth65vx100u .jpgPanasonic's Premiere series professional plasma line has been very popular with custom installation companies since the demise of Pioneer's plasma business. They only come in 50 and 65-inch screen sizes.  One of the nice features of these sets is the ISF ccc feature, which can be implemented to create two new locked picture modes, ISF Day and ISF Night, for each input being used. Oddly enough, this Premiere line is not as color accurate as Panasonic's less expensive G10, G15, and V10 series consumer models. The color space is way beyond Rec 709, which is a deal breaker for anyone wanting an accurate display.

Contrast Ratio: This is the single most important aspect of the picture to the human eye. I would rate the TH-65VX100 3rd in plasma HDTVs behind the Pioneer Elites (Ranked #1), and Panasonic's own TC-P65V10.  The best of the LED backlit LCD panels also have slightly better contrast ratio over the TH-65VX100.

Panasonic G15 Series Plasma Panels: AWESOME VALUE for an exceptionally accurate series of plasmas E-mail
Quick Look Reviews
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

panasonic tc-p50g15.jpgI just calibrated my first Panasonic TC-P50G15 and TC-P42G15 plasma panels recently, and wanted to report back my findings.

While the slightly more expensive V10 series sets that also sport the THX mode provide a higher contrast ratio by virtue of slightly better blacks, the G15 series panels are a superb value when you consider price versus accuracy and performance. THX certified, these panels, set in the THX mode, provide an excellent level of accuracy. I see little or no difference between the G10 and the G15 series panels.

As you can see in the CallMan Pro (pdf), the primary and secondary color accuracy on the G15s is excellent. Also, note that the gamma is a nearly perfect 2.2 curve, and grayscale tracking is also quite good. All these performance parameters add up to an exceptionally accurate reproduction of the video signal.

Quick Look Reviews
Sunday, 13 December 2009

samsungs un55b8500.gif Samsung has recently introduced super slim direct LED backlit LCD panel. It has a super slim form factor similar to their problematic Edge Lit LCD panels (the UN6000, 7000, and 8000 series sets) introduced earlier this year, and smokes in performance all other LED type LCD panels to date.

Panasonic S Series Plasmas: The Best Value in Plasma? E-mail
Quick Look Reviews
Wednesday, 09 December 2009

panasonic viera s1 series tc-p65s1.jpgI have recently calibrated three new Panasonic TC-P65S1 65-inch plasmas. At about $2,500 from TweakTV and other online venues, this 65-inch plasma is the best value in the category.

Contrast ratio by virtue of good blacks and solid light output is excellent although, of course, not as good as the Pioneer Kuros and Elites from 2008/09. While the S series panels are not as accurate in the area of primary (red, green, and blue) and secondary (cyan, magenta, and yellow) colors as the vaunted V-series from Panasonic, they are not that far off. Green is the furthest off the spec, and then red. The rest of the colors are fairly close to the HD specifications.

In fact, the S-series sets are somewhat closer to the HDTV (Rec 709) color specifications (click here for all of the in depth stats) than the far more expensive professional Panasonic Premiere VX100 series that features the ISF ccc certification. The S Series plasmas come in 46, 50,54, 58, and 65-inch screen sizes.

Panasonic V10 Series Plasmas: Best of the category since the demise of Pioneer's plasma business E-mail

panasonic tc p58v10.jpg I have recently calibrated several 50 (TC-P50V10 ) and 58-inch (TC-P58V10 ) V-series Panasonic panels, and they have all calibrated quite accurately.  In the THX mode, the primary and secondary colors are reasonably close to the HDTV (Rec 709) color gamut standard, the gamma curve is a very smooth sloping 2.2, and the grayscale tracks very linearly. The blacks, while not quite as good as the Pioneers or some of the LED direct backlit LCD panels currently on the market, are nonetheless quite compelling, giving the panel very good contrast ratio.
