2 Questions for on my Samsung LN-52A650 3 Months ago Karma: 0
I purchased this TV Friday, and have a few questions.
1st: When i push the info button, it displays the incoming resolution @ 60hz. Does the tv process the image up to 120hz? Circuit City told me if i used a 120 hz HDMI monster cable (which i have ready many threads stating that the 120hz cable is nothing but BS) then it would display the resolution @ 120 hz. When i plugged in the cable, it still showed @60hz?
I do notice on my PS3 w/ blue ray discs, that the auto motion has kicked in a looks great (usually set at medium).

2nd: Any recommended settings on my PS3? any different from the general settings?
Thanks....

The 120Hz motion processing, or as Samsung calls it - "Movie Plus" - is designed to work in conjunction with film-based material as an anti-'judder' feature. Judder is the herky-jerky effect with slow camera pans on 24Hz, film based material that is played back on a 60Hz-referenced display. "24" times 3 = 72; not divisible without artifacts. However, "24" times five = 120, or, divides equally without a left over artifact to the process.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the cable, as it is circuitry within the TV and not brought in externally in any manner. Will a high-quality cable connecting a Blu-ray machine increase the potential for perfect data transfer that retains all the information in the signal? Sure. Does it do anything for 120Hz? No more than anything a Witch Doctor can do.

As for staying at 60Hz with the Monster Cable HDMI connected? Probably a menu setting in the TV (not set to "Auto", where it would detect the 24 Frames Per Second within film content on a Blu-Ray DVD). NTSC DVDs are 30 FPS, so the 60Hz feature works, as 30 divides equally into 60...and 120. However, if the TV is set to AUTO, it picks up on the 3:2 pulldown, senses it as an NTSC DVD, and places the TV into the 60Hz refresh mode. You may, or may not, be able to select 120Hz with NTSC, I don't recall. The last set like this that I calibrated was about 2 months ago.

As for question #2, you may be best served in your normal, and nominal viewing environment, to pick up the DVE Blu-ray disk, and adjust with your PS3, your cable, within your circumstances for Contrast / Brightness. The other settings should prove just fine.

Coyotes,

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

I have ran both my TV and PS3 with the Monster HDMI vs. an off brand, and the difference is hardly noticeable. I believe the push for the "Monster" brand is definitely a racket.
I will be getting a refund from CC today for $129.00, nice.

As for the display of the 60hz regarding the input info, here is what Samsung is telling me.
I spoke to a tech from the main 800 #, and he said the 60hz is the signal rate from the cable box / ps3 etc..... he said the TV will process @ 120hz internally, therefore stating that the display will always show a rate of 60hz.
The picture motion is very noticeable when changing the setting of the AutoMotion from Off to Low to Mid to High... so I know it is working.

Does this sound correct to you?

Thanks...

Greetings Tremonti11,
As many ISF personnel are friends of the Head Monster, Noel Lee, it would not be responsible for me to endorse the notion that it is a "racket". Politely to the contrary, what you may find is the Monster fittings at the cable ends seat more securely, they may survive hundreds of jack insertions (as with TV testing) whereas a lesser priced cable may exhibit fatigue. If it is a longer distance cable, say 6 meters or so, superior internal components to wire construction may carry the signal flawlessly, whereas on a lesser priced product, "eye pattern" issues may surface and you may get "sparkles".
With lengths of a meter or two, as you indicate, the differences may be subtle. What comforts your mind is most important, and by which you should abide.

As for Samsungs response, that could be correct. The internal conversion to 120Hz is one facet of the set's circuitry, while the incoming signal may be detected at 60Hz, therefore what the unit displays as refresh rate may truly be the incoming 60Hz.

It would still seem to me that for the consumer, you would desire the icon to display the refresh rate that you are utilizing, and not only / always show the incoming signal. Perhaps a dual icon, showing incoming refresh and User-adjusted display characteristics would be more beneficial to advanced users. What really matters is that you notice the difference in the settings, and can select one that is most free from arifacting without having that "Day Time Serial" appearance when not desired.

Thanks for your interest in Tweak TV. Please tell your friends!

Coyotes,
Fair enough, maybe racket wasn't the correct term for Monster HDMI. On a lighter noter, I do give kudos to Monster guitar cords, as they are by far the best, noticeable difference coming from an experienced musician. But that's beside the point.

I really appreciate the help, this site has been great. The recommended settings on the LN52A650 made a great difference. I have already passed the site on to many of my friends, and i hope to get in touch with a pro for further calibration.

Regards
DD
