According to sales figures from last year, Vizio's VX32L was the largest selling 32-inch HDTV in the U.S. This year's VO32L 32-inch LCD panel promises to be another big hit. Vizio was kind enough to lend TweakTV this new model for a Sneak Preview for our members. With a street price of just $649, the VO32L is aggressively priced to say the least.
The VO32L has very generous connectivity for a set in this price category. It sports three HDMI inputs, which is unusual in an entry level product. As far as features go, there are a few that are noteworthy including the built-in QAM off-air digital HDTV tuner, which enables you to get local HDTV channels with an inexpensive indoor digital antenna. Zenith used to make one called the Silver Sensor that sold for about $40. Selectable color temperatures are available including Cool, Normal, Warm, and Custom. The Custom options will give a qualified technician some rudimentary grayscale controls that actually work pretty well. I was able to dial in the grayscale on my sample to a fair degree of accuracy, although I suspect at its price few will opt for professional calibration of this set.
How is the picture? Considering the cost of the display, the picture quality is quite good. It has a backlight feature that helps improve black level performance when lowered to a reasonable level. Color decoding is accurate, which means it delivers good saturated colors. As mentioned above, the set offers limited grayscale controls for calibrating the grayscale. This won't be the center piece of many home theaters mainly due to its small screen size, but it could be a good solution for a number of other applications in the house like a bedroom, a den, or even in a large kitchen installation. What about in your gym where ambient light is frequently an issue? It is a perfect solution for high ambient light environments, and this LCD panel can certainly pump out the light necessary to produce a viewable picture in these kinds of viewing conditions.
Vizio has some interesting products coming out this summer including a fairly high-end 50-inch plasma, the VP505F, with Silicon Optix HQV video processing that will retail for $1,699, and will hit the market in late July. They are also introducing a 32-inch plasma, the VP322, which will retail for the ridiculously low price of $649. This is a screen size that hasn't been available from any plasma manufacturer since Sony's last model some years ago. Panasonic used to have a couple of 37-inch plasma models that fit the bill for many folks with small viewing environments. The Vizio should be a product that fills a need for those with small living quarters. So look out for Vizio this summer. Come discuss Vizio's product in the TweakTV forum http://www.tweaktv.com/forum/vizio/showcat.html.
