Professional calibration on flat panel LCDs, can contribute to display device longevity when Contrast (White Level) is reduced and by default, heat is reduced. It is a simple yet misunderstood misnomer to say that one should choose LCD over Plasma because Plasma will inherit phosphor wear and "burn in". While it certainly could, and would if abused, LCD is not without its issues. Heat affects all electronics, and if an LCD flat panel is subjected to a prolonged static duty cycle (not within a viewing cycle of a single user's duration, but a "routine" such as the same channel with a banner as news or sports information channels utilize, say in a sports bar setting) then the transistors (more likely a surface mounted device) can fail prematurely. In the case of LCD, that might manifest as a few, or a row, or a panel address section of pixels staying stuck on or stuck off. This is hauntingly familiar to Plasma burn - and looking very similar - only from a different cause. Reducing Contrast and the strain on all associated parts from the power supply all the way to crystal polarization contributes to minimizing the potential for failure as well as lending to a better image fidelity when properly adjusted. Why does a manufacturer allow the "gas pedal" to go all the way to the floor? Many of these products are borrowed from the Signage divisions of these companies, where the unit gets replaced when it fails. As this is acceptable and is factored into budgets (say at airports or large venues such as stadiums) they live - they die - they are replaced. Likely, the consumer doesn't take such a analytical and unemotional approach to his beloved home theater centerpiece.
