Samsung PN58C7000 Plasma HDTV Quick Review Print E-mail
Written by Kevin Miller

samsung pn58c7000.jpgPros: At about $2,500, the PN58C7000 is a relatively good value in big screen plasmas. Good feature set with very good connectivity. 3D ready.

Cons : Blacks are not as good as the best Panasonics (Especially the VT25 series). Color decoding continues to push red slightly rendering skin tones too pink.

To Buy Or Not To Buy? A good performer overall with slightly better blacks than last year’s flagship models the PN860 series. While not quite as good as Panasonic’s best THX certified models, the PN58C7000 is a credible performer. Recommended.

Samsung’s new line of C7000 series plasma panels are quite a bit more impressive in terms of picture quality and performance than their Edge lit LED LCD cousins. The PN58C7000 specifically is a good overall performer with better black levels than last year’s flagship 860 series panels. Blacks are not quite as good as on Panasonic’s VT25 series soon to be reviewed here, but they are good enough to give the panel solid contrast ratio. Color accuracy is mostly good except for the nagging little bit of “Red Push” in the color decoder that makes skin tones too pink looking. Video processing is also relatively good although I am not sure how much the 600Hz Subfield Motion feature brings to the table.

Contrast Ratio:  By virtue of improved blacks over last year’s plasma panels, the contrast ratio is relatively good on the PN58C7000. Gamma is also excellent. I measured a 2.3 gamma curve in the 0 setting, which is nearly ideal for a darkened theater like environment for movie watching. 2.4 is the ideal number for that type of viewing, and 2.2 would be more appropriate for viewing with some but not too much light in the room. Bottom line: 2.3 is a happy medium, and the panel will deliver excellent shadow detail as a result.

Color Accuracy: Overall color accuracy is mostly good. However, I do have two complaints on this front. First off, Samsung’s color decoding on both the plasma and the LCD line continues to push Red, which makes skin tones appear too pinkish. Unfortunately, this problem is not fixable without significantly de-saturating color. Secondly, at least on the PN58C7000 I calibrated in the field, the luminance of Cyan was way down making the Cyan in a color bar pattern look wrong even though it measured correctly after calibration. I have had this issue with other Samsung panels with Green and other colors depending on the set. This sometimes completely negates the positive aspects of using the CMS (Color Management System) to fine tune the primary and secondary colors. In this case, it was not severe enough to make me put all of the CMS controls back to the factory default.

Video Processing: Relatively solid video processing with good 2:3 pull-down for film based video sources on cable, satellite, and SD DVD. This feature can be found in the Film Mode settings where it should be set to Auto 1 for the best results. It also has a Motion Jutter Cancelor Feature, which is intended for 24p Blu-ray movies, but I found it worked poorly giving motion that odd Soap Opera look that similar features on LCD panels create. It is too bad as all Samsung has to do is offer a setting that processes to a multiple of 24 like 48 or 72 Hz, which would be usable provided it worked properly. Panasonic had problems with this until just last year when they finally implemented a 96Hz feature on the THX certified panels that worked properly.

Wrapping Up: Overall the PN58C7000 is a solid performing panel. I do wish Samsung would fix the color decoding issue, and provide a usable processing setting for 24p Blu-ray playback. The step up 8000 series offers Cal Night and Cal Day picture modes , and a Real Black Filter feature that promises to improve blacks. I am looking forward to getting my hands on one to see how good the blacks really are. In any case considering the price for performance ratio the PN58C7000 is a TweakTV recommended plasma panel.

I also experienced the pinkish cast on my new Samsung 58590 series. Having white balance adjustments in the user menu made it easy for me to adjust this out. I have the setting on "red gain" down to "13" from "25, with "cool" color temp, and it looks really natural, to me, now, greys look grey, reds plenty satirated, and it looks great. Hope this helps. A Pro ISF cal would surely improve things, but it looks great to me, now..and inky blacks:I find no need for any blacker. Mike

Sorry about the above typo: ahem, "Saturated".

On my PN58C7000 I have blurs or vertical blind like blurs that form around people as they move fast across the screen It happens on all sources u-verse and 1080P 24hz Blu-ray. How do I get rid on this? I have my user menu adjustments setup just like you have in the Tweak my TV section. Also I have the latest 1021.2 firmware. There one user menu setting I could not find in the Picture options category...Motion Jutter Canceler : Off Is there a reason I can't find this menu and could it have something to do with the aforementioned problem with blur around people? Thanks Steven

Hi Guys,

Mike you would be closer to the standard in the Warm 2 color temperature than Cool. Chances are your grayscale is extremely blue.

Steven its strange that you would have the same motion problems with 1080i 60Hz (U-Verse) and 1080p/24fps Blu-ray. The Motion Jutter Canceler made motion look really odd on the unit I calibrated. You should have access to it. If you do play with it and see what happens. You should consult the manual and see what it says about the feature.

Hi Kevin

I checked it out and found that only the PN58C8000 has the Motion Jutter Canceler as a menu option, the C7000 does not show it in the manual but the C8000 does. So i'm assuming you calibrated a PN58C8000 instead of the C7000 if the set in question had the Motion Jutter menu unless they made some sort of manufacturing change.

Hi

Well yes and no. Apparently you can change a 7000 into an 8000 in the Service Menu. If you go into the Service Menu there is an item somewhere in there that you check off and the 7000 magically becomes an 8000 with Cal Day, Cal Night, and I guess the Motion Jutter Canceler. I didn't do it for him, but he told me about it.

Ok That explains it! Now comes the big question?
How do I get into the service menu and change this setting it would be great to have the extra options.
Just so you know I'm ISF certified so should be able to handle the change and if you want to email it privately I understand.

Thanks, Steven

Hi Kevin

Don't worry about it I figured it out was pretty easy now I just need to know your Cal Night and Cal day settings if you have them.

Thanks, Steven

Hi Steven,

I will have to check my file on the calibration and get back to you. It may be a day or two as I am tied up with consulting work this week on the west coast.

I am glad you figured it out on your own as we have made a decision not to publish Service Menu entry information on this site as it can cause manufacturers problems. Please be very careful of what you do in the Service Menu as it can get you in real trouble if you trip the wrong item
spatter   | 75.9.116.214 | 2010-06-29 19:18:20
Yeah they even look they could cause trouble the only adjustment I made was to change c7000 to c8000 and saved changes. I will also be tied up studying for IT Microsoft exams so when you get freed up just post them, Thanks Steven

I have known people to lose entire inputs by going into the service menu. I would never do it, but in this case, it seems tempting. Kevin, give the final word please.
