Where to Buy Your HDTV
Page 2

Depending on what your needs are, there are a few different options open to you for purchasing your new HDTV.

One of these options would be to buy it on the Internet. If you are a do it yourselfer, then internet purchasing may be the right option for you. Be careful, and do some research beforehand on the company you plan on making the purchase with. Make sure the seller is an authorized reseller for the product you are planning on buying, and that it will come with the full manufacturer’s warranty.

If you want the set mounted on the wall, and the wiring run through the walls from your equipment rack to the TV, you should plan on doing it yourself or having a contractor or a carpenter do it for you. If you are handy or if you have a good contractor that you are comfortable with to do the installation work for a simple A/V system, it will probably cost you less than if you were to buy it from a big electronic chain store or from a custom installation outfit. The one big caveat is that you will have to deal with any service related issues yourself if something goes wrong with any of the equipment you purchased.

DO IT YOURSELF INTERNET PURCHASE
PROS:
  • You get exactly what you want
  • You save money doing it
CONS:
  • Must either do the installation yourself or arrange for someone with the necessary skills to do it for you
  • Must deal with any repair issues yourself if the product breaks
  • Customer service might be problematic
Having a reputable Custom Installation company sell and install your whole A/V system is a much better option for most of us that are either not suited for the do it yourself aspects of an Internet purchase or who simply don’t have the time to deal with it or the potential service issues that may occur in the future. The more complicated a system you want, the more important service is likely to be. Small custom installation companies or what some refer to as “integrators” are likely to deliver better service than big electronic chain stores, as it is one of the ways they can differentiate themselves from larger companies. Since they cannot compete on price, smaller companies will also likely offer better or “high end” HDTVs that larger chain stores don’t carry. A good Custom outfit will also be able to demonstrate properly setup and calibrated HDTVs (What is Professional Calibration) in its showroom or at client’s homes, so you can get an idea of the picture quality of a given HDTV before you take the plunge. These companies are also likely to take much more pride in what they do, and consequently do better work as well.
Many of these specialty retailers or custom installation companies will also offer Professional Calibration services either from their own staff or from an outside contractor like TweakTV’s professional calibrators. Therefore, you will be more likely to get superior picture and sound quality from your entire system.
As with any major purchase, you should do your research to find a reputable company to design and install your system. A good start is to contact CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association) at www.cedia.org. CEDIA is an organization that has been training custom installation companies for nearly 20 years now, and has a good reputation.
