The fall of Samsung. The rise of Vizio Print E-mail

2004_alcs_finals_display_image.jpgHow did that happen?  I am sure the people of Netscape said this when Microsoft took all of their market share during the days of the browser wars.   The New York Yankees said it too when the Boston Red Sox came back from a 3-0 deficit in a 7 game series to win the division in 2004.   Samsung will be saying the exact same thing within two years.  How did THAT happen?

Panasonic HDC-SDT750 3D Camcorder. The future of 3D? Print E-mail

panasonic hdc-sdt750k.jpgTo 3D or not to 3D, is that the question?   As a consumer, do we even have a choice in the matter?   3D movies are forced down our throat on what feels like a daily basis.   3DTVs are manufactured "3D ready" yet sacrifice picture quality and corner the consumer into proprietary technologies (3D Glasses).

Will this 3D trend catch on?   Yes, but by force.

Vizio: Moving from Value to Value and Quality Print E-mail

vizio vf552xvt.jpgBrands create solid products and usually reap the financial benefits.   As brands look to grow their business further, they broaden their market appeal by creating entry level products.   Sometimes this works, some times it does not.  In the automobile business Mercedes and BMW have succeeded.   While these brands are associated with luxury and expense, most of their sales are generated from their "entry" models (i.e 3 Series BMW),  instead of their highest end product offerings.   They established the brand with luxury and went down market to generate more sales.

What is happening to picture quality? Pretty frames, 3DTV, Internet, Widgets Print E-mail

samsung-b9000-series-led-backlit-hdtv.jpgI am concerned for all picture quality enthusiasts.  Over the last couple of years a pattern has established that is a movement AWAY from accurate picture quality.   First, Pioneer ended its magical run as the producer of the finest panels on earth.  (I will hug my perfectly calibrated KRP-500M for as long as it blasts its brilliant images).  Then, 3DTV crept into our worlds this year and the story is not too good for all visual purists.   The Samsung C Series LED lines might be the "first LED 3DTV", but the overall picture quality is not better than its predecessors.   You sacrifice overall picture quality for the ability to see 3D images.   I do not expect the trend to stop here.

250_3d_glasses.jpgCongratulations!   You are an early adopter!   You are the first one on the block with a Samsung 3DTV!  Go show that IPAD owner what cool really means, right?   But that cool neighbor is also an early adopter and has a 3DTV as well!   However, you had yours first, so you win the arms race and his is a Panasonic, so phooey.

You guys are buds so you want to have a 3D party to see whose  3DTV is better.
